Every website has a story behind it. Ours began long before this one, with a love of travel, a camera, and the idea of sharing our experiences with other people.
It started in 1986
Rob first began travelling overseas in 1986. Those journeys became part of a much bigger story: discovering new places, meeting people, collecting memories and wanting to share what we had seen.
The World Traveller years
In 2003, Rob launched the original World Traveller website. It grew from a personal project into a busy travel website, bringing together destination information, experiences and stories from our travels. At its peak in 2008, it was receiving around 12,500 visitors a day and had won several website awards for its design and content.
As time went on, Rob’s overseas work travel came to an end and the pace of travelling changed. Holidays continued, but there was less new material for a site built around frequent travel. The name World Traveller no longer felt quite right, so the site gradually slipped into the background.
From old video tapes to YouTube
Video has been part of Rob’s life for many years, going back to the days of full-size VHS cameras. In 2016, we joined YouTube as a convenient place to share videos with family and friends. Later, we made more of our videos public and were pleasantly surprised by the interest they attracted.
We began sharing more of our journeys through the Travel With Rob and Sue YouTube channel. We also started revisiting older footage, bringing past trips back to life alongside our newer adventures.
A new name, with the same stories
As the YouTube channel developed, we brought the website back with a new name and a fresh purpose: Travel With Rob and Sue. We gathered older travel stories and newer experiences together, alongside other things we enjoy sharing. The aim was never to become an encyclopaedia of travel information. We’re just two ordinary people telling the stories behind the places we visit and the things we do.
That means you’ll find more than holidays here. There are cruises, short breaks and days out, but also family and everyday life, retirement, photography, art and other interests that happen to take our fancy. Our YouTube channels are another part of that picture, each giving us a different way to share what we’re up to.
Where we are today
This website is the home for our written stories and the different sides of our lives. The Travel With Rob and Sue channel shares our journeys past and present, while Retired with Rob and Sue gives our retirement adventures their own chapter.
The years, the technology and the name have changed since 1986 and the launch of World Traveller in 2003, but the basic idea is much the same: share the journey, keep the memories, and invite you to come along.
