Review: Shearwater Country House

On the south coast of Ireland, sitting on the side of a hill overlooking the beautiful Glandore harbour and the fishing village of Union Hall, the Shearwater Country House bed and breakfast is a idyllic location for visiting Cork, Skibbereen and the South West of the country.
Comprising of a small number of sea view rooms in the main house, and small studio also with commanding sea views, the elevated position gives unrivalled views over the harbour and surrounding countryside.

We had a few email exchanges with the owner, Adela, regarding Sue’s difficulties with stairs and steps, and she kindly allowed us to have the Studio, which was accessible via a couple of steps from the car park, while our friends stayed in the balcony room above the main lounge area.

The main house boasts a beautiful lounger area, and a dining room again with sea facing views.    As access to the dining room was going to be difficult for us, Adela kindly offered to bring our breakfast down to the Studio, which was delicious.   Our friends also enjoyed their relaxed breakfast while watching the fishing boats coming in from a morning’s fishing trip.

I quickly visited their balcony room which was spacious and fitted out to a very high standard, and the same applied to the Studio, which contained it’s own kitchen area, bathroom, double bed and relaxing armchairs facing out through the large patio style doors.

Although we were not fortunate to see anything during our visit, there is apparently a whole host of sea life that visits the bay, and excursions including whale watching are available locally.  The view over the bay at night is equally serene,

We were only staying for one night so did not need to locate local shops, but we did take up Adela’s recommendation for an evening meal at Dinty’s, down in the village, and we can heartily recommend it.

If you are in this neck of the woods and looking for something a little bit different, you couldn’t do much better than spending the night at the Shearwater.

We visited the Shearwater Country House B&B in May 2019.
